3D printing has been there since three decades and every industry is benefiting from the technology. Automobile industry is also profiting with a conscious effort for design and build to performance lead activity. And thus the industry needs an efficient tool which would facilitate the making for better and efficient business. OEMs & Designers have only recently begun to understand its commercial benefits beyond prototyping. It has significantly altered the ways OEMs approach model designing, development, and manufacturing. It is helping car manufacturers across the globe shorten their product development phase, reduce prototype costs, and test new ways of improving efficiency.

Conventionally, OEMs outsourced the process of prototyping to machine shops, which not only resulted in additional costs but also took weeks and even months to produce a part. Moreover, if the produced part needed modification, then the modified blueprint was sent to the machine shop again for production, resulting in a repeat of the entire process and cycle eating away time for the final make for the machine. Since time and cost are the key factor resulting in the price point and production. It was imperative that the conventional method is curbed to ensure efficiency in design thinking and faster execution of ideas for implementation, creating the prototypes in less than day or even hours

And due to lower costs and turnaround time, this technology has given OEMs the flexibility to use a fleet of printers to try out multiple & complex designs at once, rather than being limited to one design. This has largely helped OEMs boost quality levels, as they do not waste too much time applying modifications to their designs and then testing them. 3D printing tools have given the designer a better handle to focus on creativity and get the best out of their imagination to avoid being compromised with the time allocated to them.

Dr. Surendra Pal,Vice Chancellor, Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, Pune, Former Advisor, ISRO, Govt of India.

Dr. Surendra Pal, is space communication technologist, accomplished researcher, academician, administrator and visionary of great repute is an alumnus of Birla Institute Of Technology and Science, Pilani and Indian Institute of Science Bangalore. Dr. Pal is former Senior Advisor Satellite Navigation Programme (ISRO), Distinguished Scientist, Associate Director and also Programme Director Satellite Navigation Programme at ISRO Satellite Centre Bangalore, was also President of Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers – India (2012-2014)

Dr. Pal joined Indian Space Research Organisation in 1971 after a brief tenure at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Dr Pal pioneered the Microwave, Antenna & RF communication activities at the ISRO Satellite Centre at its inception. He was responsible for development of all Indian Satellite onboard Telecommunication Systems, starting from Aryabhat to IRS, INSAT, GSAT, Low Earth Orbit series of spacecrafts and Chandrayan.

Mr. Dilip Chhabria, an Alumni of Art Centre, Pasadena, USA, heads an automotive OEM coupled to the styling, prototype and customizing services business.

His is a case of a designer, who left a secure job at GM design Centre Detroit to return to India with the vision of creating his own brand. 23 years down the line DC design has come to occupy an enviable position in the automotive pantheon with a dynamic matrix of products, and services and customers across the B to B and B to C segments.

His has been a case of design being used as a differentiator and driver to build an entrepreneurial business model in a country where words like design, aesthetics and styling have been trail blazed by him.

Dr. B. B. Ahuja, Director, College of Engineering Pune

Prof. Dr. B. B. Ahuja, Director is a graduate in Mechanical Engineering with a post-graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering. For his doctorate, he did his research in Hybrid Bearing Design for High Speed Spindles at College of Engineering, Pune (COEP). He also holds a Masters degree in Management Science.

Prof. B. B. Ahuja is the Professor of the Production Engineering Department and Director of College of Engineering, Pune. He has to his credit 105 technical published papers in National & International Journals and Conferences. His research papers have been widely cited, in technical papers and reference books.

Mr. Rajiv Madhav Mandke, Former, Director , ACMA Technology Centre

He is currently an independent Automotive Consultant. Instrumental in transforming 260 companies through ‘Cluster’ approach at ACMA & Deployed the training programs in over 25 Foundation, Advanced & SME cluster groups. Developed high impact modules & integrated process flows for increased competitiveness. Promoted ownership of processes at all levels for increased output & cost reduction.Strengthened lines of communication & reporting within the organization as well as cluster levels for enhanced swiftness in decision making. Mr. Neelkanth Marathe, Senior Deputy Director, Power trains, Automotive Research Association of India

MrNeelkanthMarathe began his career in the engine development division at Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). Moving through several responsible positions, he currently heads the powertrain engineering division and is responsible for engine and transmission design and development projects for domestic and overseas manufacturers. With more than 30 years of experience, Mr. Marathe has led several major engine R&D projects. Many of them have been commercialized successfully both by domestic and overseas OEMs. His individual domain strength and expertise include cylinder head & port design, crank-train design, valve-train design, engine emission reduction etc for I C Engines used in variety of applications.

Dr. Mukesh Agarwal, MD, 3D Product Development

Entrepreneur, Scientist, Consultant, Author, and Speaker Dr. Mukesh Agarwal is Managing Director of 3D Product Development, a private Indian firm he founded in 2000. The company provides technical services and strategic consulting in Rapid Prototyping (RP) / 3D Printing (3DP). Through his company, Dr. Agarwala has provided services to over 500 organizations in India. For the past 23 years, Dr. Agarwala has focused his education, research, and practice on design, prototyping and materials processing. Over this time, he has authored more than 50 articles, and technical papers and has been awarded 5 patents on Materials and 3D Printing. Prior to starting 3DPD in Bangalore, India, Dr. Agarwala completed his Bachelors Degree in 1988 in Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India. Subsequently, in 1994 he earned his Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin, specializing in 3D Printing Processes and Materials. In last few years, he has been actively engaged with Confederation of India Industries (CII), ASME, IMTMA, etc. in organizing and conducting Seminars on RP/3DP.
